Remarkable rock formations rise like skyscrapers—some 60 stories high—above the desert floor near the Idaho-Utah border (about 4 mi/6 km southwest of Almo). The sight amazes travelers today no less than it did immigrants on the California Trail in the mid-1800s. Some of the formations bear descriptive names, such as Devil's Bedstead, Register Rock (it's marked with the graffiti of passing pioneers), Twin Sisters and Treasure Rock, where a huge cache of stolen gold is said to be buried. 200 mi/320 km southeast of Boise.
