Perched on a hill on the outskirts of town, this evocative yet casual inn refers to itself as "The Inn for All Seasons," but the emphasis is on winter: The area is a haven for cross-country skiers, with trails leading from the inn right into town and the hills. This inn began life as a farmhouse more than 200 years ago, with some sections having subsequently served as a church (1802) and a jail. Today, it is a hodgepodge of rustic gewgaws, pumpkin-pine floors, brick fireplaces, a library, and a lounge with a TV and a perennial Christmas tree. The inn has been thriving since the new owners arrived, and at inspection the hands-on owners were primping and preening the place.
Creaky floors in the little lobby signal the reception staff to get to work. Farther in, the informal dining room serves breakfast and candlelit dinners, and the small pub serves a variety of cocktails and beer on tap. The pool cabana is the spot for lunch and beverages.
The outdoor pool is just across the road. A game room, playground, sauna and outdoor hot tub are on-site, and hiking and cross-country ski trails, boutiques and antiques shops are nearby. The former carriage house serves as the spa, offering a variety of massage, health and beauty treatments. The barn, with
a 12-ft fieldstone fireplace, serves as a conference center for up to 75 people. Self-service laundry is a nice perk, especially for families. Pets are not permitted here.
Guest rooms in the main inn are quaint and cozy, just like grandma's house. All display a pleasing mix of antiques and reproduction pieces. Phones, TVs and air-conditioning are standard, and some add whirlpools tucked into former closet space. Rooms in the Barn, Log Cabin, Salt Box and Sugar House and the two-bedroom cottages are the ones to request. These have fireplaces, refrigerators, data ports, TVs (except in the Salt Box) and good views from decks. A1, a bi-level unit in the barn, is a great choice. Rooms are set aside for nonsmokers and travelers with disabilities.
This homey place boasts welcoming owners and excellent rates during peak seasons. Though it lacks the civility and style of Manor on Golden Pond, the rates and spa here are a draw.
