Up in the hills above Port of Spain and a 45-minute drive from the airport is this brightly painted yellow- and salmon-colored hotel. Good management and renovations make this a viable option for families and conferences, as some of the properties in town seem to be going downhill and have the added stress of neighborhood problems. The setting here is beautiful and comparatively quiet.
A modest dining room is the site of Itiki Restaurant, which serves all meals, generally buffets with some a la carte options off a menu offering
local and international dishes.
The pool, with a swim-up bar that may or may not be open, is on a raised terrace across the parking lot where there is also a small bandstand for occasional live entertainment. Three waterslides and a splash pool constitute the so-called water park, and it is oddly located on the other side of the building away from the main pool area. A hiking trail climbs steeply into the hills above to a panorama from atop the ridge. A lighted tennis court, a large fitness center and a squash court round out the activity
options.
Meeting spaces number six plus a ballroom handling up to 1,000 people. Wireless Internet access is free, and a business center is also on-site.
The carpeted rooms are mediocre but clean and come with one or two double beds and built-in desks. Superior rooms offer two queen beds. Standard in all are air-conditioning, phones, TVs, laptop-sized safes, irons, clock radios, balconies and combination baths. Two rooms are accessible to wheelchairs, and five are smoke-free. Room service runs from 7 am to 11 pm.
The bright colors seem to indicate that this place is trying hard to impress, and compared to some of the other midrange properties in town, this is surely a cut above. This will work for conferences and some tranquility away from the nearby city, but the truly nice properties start at Kapok and go up.
