Cancun has nearly 29,000 hotel rooms. Accommodations range from lavish resorts to high-rise hotels to more modest lodgings. Condominiums, time-shares and all-inclusive resorts are abundant in Cancun and along the coast, but there are few budget offerings. Be aware that as new hotels go up—and upscale travelers flock to them—the quality of others often deteriorates. However, after Hurricane Wilma damaged many hotels, owners used it as an opportunity to do much-needed renovations. Most of the hotels have reopened, and only a small number are still undergoing renovations. Many of the newer resorts lie south of the 10-kilometer mark, where the surf tends to be rougher. These properties are, however, closer to the airport.

Aqua Cancun
Blvd Kukulcan Km 12.5, Zona Hotelera, Cancun, Quintana Roo, Mexico
The AQUA Cancun opened in early 2008 following a multiyear renovation of the hurricane-damaged Fiesta Americana Grand Aqua. It is still owned by Grupo Posadas, but was rebranded because it represents an entirely different concept from other hotels in the company's chains. The hotel is located near t... Read Entire Review »
CasaMagna Marriott Cancun Resort
Blvd Kukulcan Km 14.5 Retorno Chac Lote 41, Cancun, Quintana Roo, Mexico
This property tries to out-ritz the nearby Ritz-Carlton. The atmosphere is traditional yet urban, with chandeliers and pseudo-1930s architecture lending a formality that can strike guests as either stiff for a tropical resort or refreshingly different from the flimsy rattan-and-palms look of many of... Read Entire Review »
El Dorado Royale
KM 25, Carretera, Punta Brava, Cancun, Quintana Roo, Mexico
Nestled amid hundreds of acres of tropical forest and flanked by a white-sand beach, this resort offers a nice change of pace from the crowded mega-resorts lining most of the area's beaches. Unlike some of the Playacar and Cancun outfits, this resort has enough breathing space to spread itself out.... Read Entire Review »
Dreams Cancun Resort & Spa
Punta Cancun S/N, Zona Hotelera, Cancun, Quintana Roo, Mexico
On a promontory, surrounded on three sides by water in Cancun's hotel zone, this all-inclusive resort exhibits a blend of traditional Mayan and contemporary Mexican architecture. Substantial renovations refreshed the already recently remodeled resort. The point location is ideal, offering placid but... Read Entire Review »
Fiesta Americana Grand Coral Beach
Blvd Kukulcan Km 9.5, Lote 6 Zona Hotelera, Cancun, Quintana Roo, Mexico
With a megalithic 11-story entry next to Dreams Cancun, this huge hotel offers the multifaceted facilities of a large high-end resort at rates that often undercut Ritz-Carlton's. Public areas are on a grand scale, the accommodations are also exceptionally large, and the privileged location packs in... Read Entire Review »
Gran Melia Cancun
Blvd Kukulcan Km 16.5, Cancun, Quintana Roo, Mexico
Melia's flagship in Mexico is the second-largest hotel in Cancun, and although it is a much more professional operation than the chain's larger Oasis Cancun, its sense of exclusivity has been watered down by aggressive time-share salespeople prowling the public areas. (The rapidly growing time-share... Read Entire Review »
Hilton Cancun Golf & Spa Resort
Blvd Kukulcan Km 17, Zona Hotelera, Cancun, Quintana Roo, Mexico
This is one of the more reliable deluxe hotels in Cancun, offering more facilities than any guest could possibly use. A $10-million renovation brought improvements to both the public spaces and accommodations. What its international tropical style lacks in Mexican character, it more than makes up fo... Read Entire Review »
JW Marriott Cancun Resort & Spa
Blvd Kukulcan Km 14.5, Cancun, Quintana Roo, Mexico
Located next to the Cancun Palace, this 14-story modern international resort is one of the best hotels in Cancun. It resonates to a much higher deluxe frequency than the neighboring CasaMagna, a jointly managed property connected by a footbridge. The staff is trained to remember guests' names, servi... Read Entire Review »
Le Blanc Spa Resort Cancun
Blvd Kukulcan Km 10, Zona Hotelera, Cancun, Quintana Roo, Mexico
Formerly Sierra Cancun, this newly remodeled and upgraded hotel is appropriately named; the building is blindingly white, situated at the top of an inclined drive to the front steps. Chrome palms (decapitated from the hurricane at inspection) rise out of a fountain pool in front. The air-conditioned... Read Entire Review »
Le Meridien Cancun Resort & Spa
Retorno del Rey, Lote 37/1, Km 14, Cancun, Quintana Roo, Mexico
Between the azure Caribbean and Laguna Nichupte, this one-time deluxe competitor with the JW Marriott and Ritz-Carlton has suffered a dimmed reputation, thanks to uneven service and bland, overpriced meals. The JW is newer, and the Ritz is more opulent, but this place has a more contemporary look an... Read Entire Review »
The Ritz-Carlton, Cancun
Retorno del Rey 36, Zona Hotelera, Cancun, Quintana Roo, Mexico
This sophisticated urban hotel almost looks out of place among the resort revelry surrounding it. Guests will not find a swim-up bar here-and if there were one, it would probably require a dress code. Though it may not be authentically Mexican, the hotel does have a fair number of regional accents,... Read Entire Review »
Riu Palace Las Americas
Km 8.5 Blvd Kukulcan Manzana 50, Cancun, Quintana Roo, Mexico
Opened in 2004, this eight-story white structure with rooftop balustrades and round colonnaded towers at the corners is more elegant than its sister Riu Cancun and better suited to couples than to party-seekers. A large, oval area rug rests beneath a stained-glass skylight, and chandeliers with mell... Read Entire Review »
Elan Resort & Spa
Blvd Kukulcan Km 3.5, Esquina Galeon, Cancun, Quintana Roo, Mexico
The Elan Resort & Spa opened in May 2007 after a $15 million renovation of the former Club Las Velas. It is located on a private beach facing the Nichupte Lagoon on the Cancun mainland, just a few miles from Cancun's main commercial and entertainment district. The hotel was designed by Mexican archi... Read Entire Review »
Casa Turquesa
Blvd Kukulcan Km 13.5, Zona Hotelera, Cancun, Quintana Roo, Mexico
This small, once-luxurious hotel is not to be confused with the Melia Turquesa. Designed to be a more intimate version of a Ritz-Carlton, it has failed to live up to its advertising. It still calls itself the "Celebrities' Hotel," after a host of Hollywood celebrities-Sylvester Stallone, Demi Moore... Read Entire Review »
Club Med Cancun
Punta Nizuc, Cancun, Quintana Roo, Mexico
This property, which sustained extensive damage during Hurricane Wilma in 2005, reopened in November 2006 following a 13-month, $20 million renovation. Changes at the resort, which is no longer an adults-only property, include a strong emphasis on the discovery of the Yucatan region; new family and... Read Entire Review »
Fiesta Americana Condesa Cancun
Blvd Kukulcan Km 16.5, Cancun, Quintana Roo, Mexico
The upper echelon of Cancun's second-generation resorts may not reach the heights of the JW Marriott, Meridien or Ritz-Carlton, but it is a commercial tour de force meant to impress a mass-market audience. Designed to Fiesta Americana's standard pueblo formula, this resort features a towering triple... Read Entire Review »
Hyatt Cancun Caribe Villas & Resort
Blvd Kukulcan Km 10.5, Cancun, Quintana Roo, Mexico
This hotel faces a surf-laced beach in the heart of the resort area, just south of the convention center. Its self-billing as a boutique resort is a stretch. It is true that this is the antithesis of a spring-break hotel, offering low-key luxury, interesting food and a relaxing atmosphere. Unfortuna... Read Entire Review »
Hyatt Regency Cancun
Blvd Kukulcan Km 8.5, Zona Hotelera, Cancun, Quintana Roo, Mexico
On the hotel-row peninsula, next to the more aesthetic Dreams and the bedraggled NH Krystal, this property grows duller with each passing year and barely hangs on to the standards necessary to justify its Hyatt Regency designation. Newer competition, including the Hyatt Cancun Caribe, routinely surp... Read Entire Review »
ME by Melia Cancun
Blvd Kukulcan Km 12 Zona Hotelera, Cancun, Quintana Roo, Mexico
This 11-story pyramid (formerly known as the Melia Turquesa) was completely remodeled and rebranded when it opened in January 2007 as Sol Melia's first ME hotel in the Americas. Designed for a hip, sophisticated clientele, the 448-room hotel is unlike anything in Cancun's hotel zone. Purple and pink... Read Entire Review »
Moon Palace Golf & Spa Resort
Carretera Cancun-Chetumal Km 340, Cancun, Quintana Roo, Mexico
Located on the southern coast close to the airport, this hotel represents the epitome of industrial-grade mass-market resort tourism. The property holds guests captive in a location regulated by the kind of security usually associated with international border crossings. A self-contained operation,... Read Entire Review »
