Bijagos Islands Travel Guide

Bijagos Islands Guide Overview

The Bijagos Islands (including Bubaque, Caravela, Orango, Uno, Roxa, Carache and Formosa, among others) are Guinea-Bissau's main tourist attractions. The archipelago, scattered in the Atlantic Ocean near the mouth of the Corubal and Geba Rivers, offers many things to do—bird watching, snorkeling, fishing—and see—tribal culture, beautiful beaches and rare saltwater hippos. We rented a boat in Bissau and spent several enjoyable days on Bubaque (the principle island) and Orango. (You can also take a weekly ferry to Bubaque from Bissau.) Bubaque's main town (also named Bubaque) has several well-kept hotels that cater mainly to French tourists. We especially recommend visiting Praia da Bruce: It has miles of clean, fine, gray sand and is practically deserted. (Take along your own drinking water.) Don't leave your belongings unattended, as petty thievery is fairly common. Bubaque is 40 mi/60 km southwest of Bissau.
