This hotel is located 2 miles from the city center, adjacent to the State of Alaska and Inter-Island Ferry terminals, and close to the access ferry from the Ketchikan International Airport. This has been the leading travelers' hotel here for nearly three decades, although it lacks the charm of the historic Gilmore. Its Best Western branding is evident in the beige clapboard siding and blue awnings, but the interior is a pleasant surprise. A recent renovation brought a new wing of guest rooms and upgraded furnishings; the western-style armoires from Texas are particularly nice. A magnificent stone fireplace warms up the entrance lounge.
At the Landing Restaurant, guests can order breakfast all day and seafood dishes at lunch and dinner. Jeremiah's Fine Food and Spirits serves up Italian-influenced meals along with views of the Tongass Narrows in a distinctive if not uncrowded pub setting.
Also on-site are a gift shop and small fitness center. Well-equipped meeting space has almost doubled with seating for 250, and business services such as complimentary wireless high-speed Internet are available. A courtesy shuttle provides transportation, and free parking is plentiful. Note that the several buildings that constitute this hotel are
not connected by covered walkways, making for a wet dash between facilities in bad weather.
Guest rooms are furnished in contemporary style with blond woods and royal-blue soft goods. A recent renovation added a few dozen more rooms in a second building, including more spacious units (a dozen of which have fireplaces). Beds are single or double queens with ordinary sheets and boring fabrics. Amenities run to TVs, microwave ovens, refrigerators, and phones with data ports and high-speed Internet access. Coffeemakers are in the combination baths. Larger suites offer a second room for relaxing plus additional TVs. As part of the remodel, they feature the newest furnishings and appliances.
Small pets are permitted for a nominal fee, and nearly half the rooms are designated smoke-free. One-fourth are suitable for handicapped guests. Taking advantage of the transient popularity of this region, high rates and frazzled service plague this operation. Housekeeping struggles to keep up during busier periods, but overall, there are far too many positive attributes to even notice.
