Located at Fifth Street, perched atop a hot new restaurant (it was once a plebian T.G.I. Friday's), this property is an unusual SoBe option. Unlike its pink and teal and sometimes psychedelic-inspired neighbors, this hotel offers style and service inspired by Ritz-Carlton, but on a smaller, friendlier scale. This mainly suite four-story package topped by a roof garden and pool is designed to compete with the likes of Casa Grande a few blocks up the street. It does, too, but guests here get colorful South Florida style, infused with a smattering of Asian accents.
Guests enter via a draped canopy to a foyer with an intricate floor of marble inlay and an antique concierge desk. An elevator rises to the second-floor lobby, which hits the same high notes with its glossy surfaces, burnished paneling
and fresh flowers. Arrivals get instant attention from the sharply dressed staff.
Drinks are served beside the rooftop pool and whirlpool, both countersunk into a multilevel deck furnished with umbrella tables. The new dining room, The Smoking Rabbit, is a hip but surprisingly humble eatery with a well-rounded menu that will impress foodies, but the decor is as simple and sound as a British pub.
The lack of meeting space underscores the hotel's residential air. Valet parking costs run high, with SUVs incurring the highest tariff.
The efficiencies,
one- and two-bedroom apartments and penthouses show smart modern furnishings balanced by the one-off traditional piece, such as an antique torchere, period art and a half-tester bed. Bold, fruity color schemes in mango and lemon-yellow spark the island decor. All units are equipped with phones with voice mail and data ports, large TVs, Kenwood stereos with CD players, fax machines and safes. Flooring varies from carpeting to marble tile to wood planking, and all units have either kitchenettes or full kitchens, the latter with ranges.
The marble baths are glossy and plush, with bidets and traditional chrome fixtures, but note that baths in all grades except two-bedroom units lack tubs. A few units facing south feature curving glassed-in balconies. The garden Junior Suites are dim and not much bigger
than the average hotel room, best to upgrade to a spacious one-bedroom unit. 500 is a perfect example, offering a spacious bedroom and bath, a sunny yellow living room, and the furnished balcony looks out over the beach and blue ocean beyond.
Concierges are on duty 24 hours a day, and room service is available from downstairs until closing time. Housekeepers are excellent. There is also an expensive fee for pets.
Service is a hallmark, and the efficient and professional staff here continues to vie with the best on the beach.
