This national park is one of the highlights of Senegal, and although once off-limits because of rebel activity, the park is again safe to visit.
The park is a preserve of forest, savanna and mangrove swamps. The diverse terrain provides homes for more than 50 types of animals, including monkeys, birds and the orycterope (a type of aardvark). The animals are often difficult to find, but the park's fascinating flora make up for it. The park, located on the Casamance River, can be viewed by boat or car.
