Six km southeast of Bridgetown, near the budget Coconut Court, this spacious beachfront resort attracts midrange individuals and small groups with its streamlined tropical surroundings, lively location and friendly energetic staff.
Corporate clients are wooed, too, with high-speed Internet access and well-equipped meeting space. Well-managed Accra Beach Hotel is among the best midrange hotels on the island.
Since the last review, big changes have occurred: a new wing of rooms, an additional pool, a Kids Club and a game room. The hotel is constantly greening, and has won the BHTA's environmental award. The entire facility is wheelchair-friendly.
This U-shaped four-story building displays a sand-colored exterior and colorful Bajan interiors. The breezy lobby showcases patterned tile,
a fountain and a ceiling adorned with a large three-dimensional fishtail. Beyond, a flashy lounge serves snacks.
The renovated beachside pavilion is popular with expats at sunset, with its alfresco section and an upscale dining room offering Caribbean and Continental fare. The Trader Vic's-style Polynesian restaurant comes complete with pupu platters.
On Thursday lavish barbecues are accompanied by colorful cabaret shows, and the manager's Monday cocktail parties are popular, too (free booze is hard to turn down).
The big free-form pool boasts a waterfall, swim-up bar, and a legion of chaise longues. The whirlpool is neatly tucked into the nearby grotto. The beach is good for bodysurfing and boogie boards, but watersports are otherwise limited.
The large fitness room and tranquil spa with a range of massages and beauty treatments come as pleasant surprises. The hotel's affiliation with a nearby 18-hole golf course proves an advantage for duffers.
Meeting facilities are active and currently accommodate up to 300 people in a single space, with additional rooms and plenty of support services. A modest business center, boutique and car rental desk are on-site. Parking is free, and pets are not permitted.
The handsome guest rooms do not overdo their tropical tone in tile floors, ceiling fans and (in the new wing) art-deco furnishings. Maintenance is adequate, and housekeepers are friendly and open to suggestions.
Furnishings in the air-conditioned rooms include desks and armoires hiding TVs. All have nightlights, voice mail, data
ports, clock radios, irons and coffeemakers.
Glass doors open to balconies with great water views, and tiled baths provide hair dryers and granite vanities. A few boast king beds.
Avoid Island View rooms, which face the parking lot, but instead, opt for the Ocean View units on the second floor and up. Some ground-floor Ocean View rooms lack privacy and views.
This solid south-coast offering is frequented by sun- and sport-minded commercial and leisure travelers. Even with its growing commercial edge, this property is superior to Southern Palms Beach Club.
