End-of-Summer Family Getaways

With prices soaring for everything from fuel to airfare to food, the great family vacation is turning into a great pain in the wallet. With that in mind, ProfessionalTravelGuide.com is showcasing the best family vacation destinations in the United States — places that are close enough to get to without busting your savings.

We’ve spanned the country offering you great destinations in every region, 12 in all. Whether you’re into camping in a national park, lounging on a seaside beach or taking in some great amusement-park rides, this list has everything you could ask for — a great family vacation right near your home.

Northeast

Hershey, Pennsylvania
Who doesn’t like chocolate? It’s a perfect place for families since it’s not a far drive from most places in the Northeast, plus it doesn’t take longer than a weekend to do everything. And if you can pull the kids away from the candy for a day, head about 50 miles southwest to Gettysburg for some historical sightseeing, well worth the tank of gas.

Cooperstown, New York
If the dads out there are looking to take their sons someplace for the weekend, there’s no better destination than this upstate New York spot. The obvious: The Baseball Hall of Fame. The not-so-obvious: The Corvette Americana Hall of Fame and Museum. Baseball and cars — what else does a father-son trip need?

Southeast

Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge
Yeah, it’s touristy, but this region has more to it than side-of-the-road shops and mini-golf courses. The Great Smoky Mountains National Park is perfect for families looking to camp under the stars. Oh yeah, don’t forget about Dollywood.

The Outer Banks, North Carolina
Sure, the beaches are going to be crowded, especially if you decide on places like Myrtle Beach, Virginia Beach and anywhere in Florida. But for something a little more subdued and a little less touristy, check out the Outer Banks of North Carolina, which has more going for it than boardwalk games and chain restaurants.

Deep South

Hot Springs, Arkansas
It’s not a sexy pick for great family vacation spots, but it’s got a little bit of everything. It’s got an amusement park (Magic Springs & Crystal Falls), a national park (Hot Springs National Park) and fun tourist “traps” (the Arkansas Alligator Farm and Petting Zoo, anyone?). And for a real treat, head 60 miles south to one of the real “gems” of the South — Crater of Diamonds State Park, where you dig for actual diamonds.

San Antonio, Texas
There’s plenty to do at the home of the Alamo. From historic sightseeing (Fort Sam Houston is a favorite) to great amusement parks (Six Flags and SeaWorld) to astounding museums (the Witte Museum is great for kids), San Antonio has something for each member of your family.

Midwest

Sandusky, Ohio
Another amusement park-focused trip, Sandusky sits on the banks of Lake Erie and is home to one of the must-see parks in the country: Cedar Point. But besides the thrill rides and cotton candy, Sandusky is a great place for camping, fishing and boating.

Branson, Missouri
Like Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge before it on this list, Branson can be touristy, flashy and a little cliché. But it’s still one of the most family-friendly places to travel, it offers plenty to see and do, and it’s still affordable.

Southwest

Sedona, Arizona
Let’s face it — everyone’s going to try and see the Grand Canyon this summer. It’s a hot (no pun intended) trip. But for something a little different, head south to Sedona, which itself is a popular destination. The views are Grand Canyon-esque, and there’s plenty to see.

EndofSummerFamily_SantaFe.jpg

Santa Fe, New Mexico
Another hot destination (pun intended), this southwest city is heavily focused on beautiful scenery and Native American culture. The Santa Fe National Forest is great for hiking. For the little ones, take the Santa Fe Southern Railway for a regular theme trip.

West Coast

Redwood National Park, California
Although Yosemite National Park is an obvious choice, you might want to check out Redwood National Park in the far northwestern part of the state. Home to the tallest trees in the world, this gem also includes several smaller parks, as well. And tidal pools, steep bluffs and beaches flanked by giant boulders make for lovely and interesting seascapes, and they’re often secluded.

EndofSummerFamily_LosAngeles.jpg

Los Angeles, California
No matter who tries to talk you out of it, Los Angeles and the surrounding area is still a great place to take a family on vacation. From its numerous attractions (Disneyland and Hollywood) to its beautiful beaches (Santa Monica, Malibu, Hermosa Beach), Los Angeles continues to be a draw for families.
