Steinbach Travel Guide

Steinbach Guide Overview

We think the best reason to visit Steinbach is to see the 40-acre/16-hectare Mennonite Heritage Village, which documents the lives of early Mennonite settlers. We enjoyed wandering through the village's restored prairie-sod house (called a semlin), print shop and blacksmith's shop. Be sure to have lunch at the restaurant, which serves such Mennonite specialties as pluma moos (a cold fruit soup), varenyky (dumplings stuffed with cottage cheese) and platz (a rhubarb crumb pie). In August, the town pays tribute to Mennonite settlers with the Steinbach Pioneer Days Festival. 30 mi/50 km southeast of Winnipeg.
