A center for Belize's sugarcane industry and 60 mi/95 km by road northwest of Belize City, this town offers little for the visitor and has few facilities. Its cultural center is one exception, with interesting exhibits when it is open. From a traveler's perspective, it's mostly notable for what it's near: the Maya archaeological sites of Altun Ha, Cuello, Lamanai and Chan Chich and the Crooked Tree Lagoon Wildlife Preserve. The Mennonite communities of Belize are also nearby. .
