Lake Assal Travel Guide

Lake Assal Guide Overview

At 510 ft/155 m below sea level, Lake Assal is Africa's lowest point and one of the lowest in the world. This practically waveless salt lake (about 6 mi/10 km across) has a moonscape setting along the Great Rift Valley. The area, an easy day trip from the capital, has gypsum and salt deposits and is home to various antelope. It is a fascinating drive, thanks to the nomads, mountains (Mount Hamed rises 3,500 ft/1,070 m) and scenic gorges found along the way. If you go with a guide they can show you some nearby hot springs. 65 mi/100 km west of Djibouti City.
