The inland harbor town of Jelgava, set on the partly polluted Lielupe River, was once a favorite of the Duke of Courland and is currently a center of the textile industry. Visit the History and Art Museum, which describes the heritage of this area 25 mi/40 km southwest of Rigaand traces the duke's relations with the Romanovs of Russia. Drop by to see the city hall and Jelgava Castle (now an academy of agriculture).
We also enjoyed walking through the landscaped park in nearby Tervete, which is full of wooden sculpture of gnomes—the fairytale characters from a book by a famous Latvian writer, Anna Brigadiere. http://www.jelgava.lv.
