On the Lapad peninsula, this hotel is a 10-minute bus ride (No. 4) from the Pila gate of the Old Town. This is one of the oldest hotels in the city, refurbished in 1999. It has a utilitarian facade, and a busy road runs in front. This property is a member of the Maestral group of Croatian hotels, partially government-owned.
The restaurant serves mainly local Dalmatian cuisine, and most guests stay on a half-board program. The buffet is an all-you-can-eat arrangement; a more specialized a la carte menu serves pasta, local fish and various meats. The large dining terrace sits beside the busy road, marring its ambience. The aperitif and cocktail bar has a terrace where live music is provided three times each week. There is also a small poolside bar.
A small pool is at the front of the hotel, also close to the main road. Use of the chaise longues is complimentary. The Nelson Hall seats 50-60 people, but business support services are limited. A computer with Internet access for guests is off the lobby. Eight parking spaces are on-site.
A small elevator carries guests to all floors. The accommodations have the appearance of a medium-grade motel, with tiled stairs and tired carpet. Rooms include eight single and three slightly larger triple rooms. Half of the rooms have been refurbished, and the remainder looked tired and dated. The style is simple and plain without any particular charm. All rooms have air-conditioning, phones and small satellite TVs. Most baths are small and were undergoing a refurbishment at inspection. Small showers are standard, but five rooms have tubs only. Most rooms have a sea view, and some have a small balcony. Other rooms have a pleasant garden and woodland view. Smoke-free rooms are available, but no rooms are specially suited for wheelchair access. Cribs are available. Room service is possible but considered unusual; guests are unlikely to choose to spend much time in their rooms.
This seasonal hotel (open from mid-March to early November) is fully booked in high season (July and August), and most guests come on package tours from northern Europe. Major detractions are the lack of charm, the busy road and the poor quality of the local beach, which is made up mainly of concrete and stones.
