Some restaurants in Bujumbura serve French cuisine, and the capitaine (Nile perch) caught in Lake Tanganyika are often exceptional. In general, the food is fairly mild and lightly seasoned. A German or Belgian influence might be detected. Local staples are beans and rice and are quite tasty. Fresh vegetables are available in most markets in provincial capitals. Primus and Amstel beers are brewed locally and can be found throughout the country.
