Sharing its name with the island, this small city (pop. 14,000) is the capital of Guadeloupe and is known for its pretty squares, public gardens and narrow streets, with the volcano La Soufriere looming behind it all. The Palais de Justice and Prefecture up on the hill in the old Carmel quarter are majestic reminders of the colonial era. Stop at the colorful market by the water (across from the bus station) before going to Fort Delgres. The massive, old, crumbling fort is now Basse-Terre's history museum, complete with wonderful views. The Cathedral of Basse-Terre, built in 1736, is also of interest. Its bell tower is separate from the main building and overlooks the city.
