On the Brazilian border and the Cuareim River, Artigas sits in the middle of cattle country. The town, named after Jose Gervasio Artigas (a patriot in the 1811 war with Brazil), was a frontier stop on the railway route to Brazil and is just across the border from Quarai, Brazil. 300 mi/485 km north of Montevideo.
