The Arctic Circle, which includes the Arctic Ocean, thousands of islands, and the northern parts of Europe, Asia, and North America, is a region of immense beauty far removed from the industrial areas of the world.
Many make the journey here during the summer months, when the area's natural beauty is uncovered from the snow and ice that predominates the region in the fiercest of cold months. Scientists and nature lovers also come to observe polarnight, or midwinter darkness, which occurs around December 21 and is when people cannot see the sun rise over the horizon.
