Professional Review

Corinthian II is a destination and expedition ship registered in Malta. She measures 4,200 tons and has a length of 297 ft. Built in 1991 as Renaissance Seven, she was one of the original octet of small ships for that company, She was refitted in 2004 and 2005 and carries up to 114 passengers and a European crew of 57 on high-standard enrichment cruises in Europe, West Africa, South America and Antarctica.

After Renaissance went bankrupt, this ship came under several different owners and charterers. Currently she is chartered year-round by Travel Dynamics International. The New York-based company was started in 1969 by two Greek brothers, and they remain in charge of the firm's operations.

Most passengers on the Corinthian II are well-heeled North Americans who have a cultural interest in the European programs or have a spirit of adventure when choosing Antarctica. Tipping depends on the charter arrangements.

Spring, summer and fall cruises explore the Mediterranean and Black seas. Then the Corinthian II heads south via West Africa and South American ports to spend the winter on 13-day expedition cruises to Antarctica. Following this program, she sails across the South Atlantic to South Africa then up the West African coast and back to the Mediterranean. The enrichment programs are among the best afloat.

The five-deck ship has a main lounge for special functions, a second piano lounge above called The Club and an adjacent well-stocked library. The open-seating restaurant is aft on the lowest deck fitted with portholes. The food is very good international fare catering to mostly American tastes. Wine is complimentary and service is by Europeans. In good weather, breakfast and lunch may be served aft at the Outdoor Cafe. A whirlpool is located on the highest deck surrounded by deck chairs. The beauty salon is up there, too.

The 57 good-size outside cabins are mostly 225 to 235 sq ft with larger suites adding balconies measuring 300 and 400 sq ft. Amenities include a TV, minifridge, safe, fresh fruit and flowers.

The Corinthian II is a dandy ship for unusual itineraries and the enrichment programs measure up with the best, all offered at a steep price.
