Professional Review

This Finnish-built expedition ship was constructed in 1982-1983 as a polar and oceanographic research vessel and as such she has an ice-strengthened hull. At 1,753 tons, she carries 48 passengers and a Russian crew of 32 at about 10 knots on trips to Antarctica.

Quark itineraries have included circumnavigations of the Antarctic Continent and the complete east-to-west trip through the Northwest Passages. The Professor Multanovskiy may also be chartered by other companies.

Passengers are adventurous and agile types who want to see wildlife in its natural habitat. They may be generalists who seek new places or those who have a special interest in birds, including the varieties of penguins seen in Antarctica. Suggested tips average $7 to $9 per day.

In winter, cruises operate from the southern tip of South America to the Falklands and Antarctica for whales, seals and Adelie, Gentoo and Chinstrap penguins, plus icebergs and a visit to a research station. Excursions and landings are by Zodiacs and all are included in the fares. The fine expedition staff gives talks and shows slides and documentaries.

There are five passenger decks, and the public spaces include a lounge and bar area, small library, dining room-cum-lecture hall with open seating, and a sauna. Meals are served buffet style for breakfast and lunch and dinner is wait-served. The food will keep you well-filled but with no pretensions. There is no elevator on this ship.

Cabins were originally designed for long research voyages, and they consist of doubles with twin beds, and doubles with upper and lower berths. Some few have wash basins only and share shower and toilet facilities. Windows and portholes can be opened in good weather. All cabins have desks, a chair and a sofa (convertible from a bed).

The Professor Multanovskiy is a veteran expedition-style ship in these waters and offers a comfortable conveyance to visit Antarctica with an excellent Quark expedition staff.
